Palestine defender Yaser Hamed Mayor has a new club, four months after playing a key role in leading Club Portugalete to the Spanish Third tier.
The Athletic Bilbao product, who turns 23 this month, will sign for Busaiteen of the Bahrain Premier League. The defender spurned opportunities in Egypt and Morocco (he had an offer from Wydad Casablanca) as well as a smattering of European offers from Switzerland, Portugal, and Greece to join the Bahraini club.
Football Palestine understands that the contract is only for six months giving the Basque born player an opportunity to showcase his skills and decamp to a bigger league when the primary transfer window opens up.
For the national team it means that the defender’s services will be readily available for qualifiers in 2021. With two home games and an away date in Saudi Arabia still left to play.
Hamed becomes the fourth Palestinian to play in the top tier of Bahraini football joining the likes of Fadi Lafi, Ismail Amour, and Imad Zatara.
Busaiteen have fallen on hard times since lifting their only league title in 2012/13. They barely avoided relegation last season- having survived a relegation playoff in order to remain in the Premier League.
Busaiteen will hope that the acquisition of Hamed will shore up a defence that leaked the most goals among non-relegated teams in 2019/20.
