The rumors have swirled for more than month. Wessam Abou Ali’s form was too good to ignore. After a year which saw him light up the Danish second tier and the Swedish top tier- Abou Ali is off to greener pastures.
Al-Ahly’s first team will field a Palestinian player for the first time since the 2009/10 season when Ramzi Saleh played for the Club of Century.
Al-Ahly were not in pole position to sign the former Denmark youth international but Sirius IK rejected overtures from Utrecht FC of the Dutch Eredivsie as an initial valuation was deemed insufficient.
Indeed, Sirius IK had a considerable amount of leverage after signing Abou Ali to a contract that ran through 2027.
Al-Ahly lodged more than one bid but in the end got the 24 year old for 2 million Euros. The fee is the highest ever obtained by Sirius IK and makes Wessam Abou Ali the most expensive transfer in Palestinian football history demanding a transfer two times the amount Pyramids FC paid to Al-Masry for Mahmoud Wadi back in 2020.
Al Ahly’s transfers director Amir Tawfik confirmed the news through the club’s official TV channel, saying: “Al Ahly has completed a full agreement with IK Sirius to sign Wessam Abou Ali.”
“Wessam Abou Ali will come to Egypt in the coming days to undergo a medical examination, and after we will officially announce his signing,” he added.
Abou Ali obtained Palestinian citizenship last year which will enable Al-Ahly to register him as a local player. There is wide speculation that Abou Ali will file a nationality switch and could soon feature for Palestine.
