Kalmar FF have decided to loan Palestinian winger Mahmoud Eid to Norwegian first division side Mjøndalen for a period of three months.
The move comes as Eid seeks consistent playing time after spending half of last season on the sidelines with a recurrent groin injury.
The 24-year old attacker had carved out a consistent playing role for himself at the beginning of last season. Eid participated in the second and third games as a substitute before earning his first start of the season on match day 4 and starting the next six matches.
His standout performance in the opening round of the Svenska Cupen (2 goals, 1 assist in Kalmar’s 5-1 win) proved to be his last game of the season. He missed the final nine league games of the season due to injury as Kalmar rebounded from an atrocious start to the league season and staved off relegation.
Eid had originally moved to Kalmar during the 2016 summer transfer window and quickly became a favorite of Peter Swärdh’s. He scored the winning goal on his debut for the club against Helsingsborg and went on to appear in 10 matches, mostly as a substitute, and accumulating 320 minutes of play and adding another goal against IFK Götheburg.
Despite an increase in starts (3 to 8) and minutes (320 to 804), Eid experienced a slump in his sophomore season with Kalmar. Now back to full health a sustained period of play in Norway should give him the mantle to show his true potential.
Speaking to Mjøndalen’s official website, Sporting Director Kenneth Karlsen gave added insight to the deal, “The reason we got Mahmoud was that we wanted to reinforce the attack. In addition, we need width in the squad…. I think he will fit well with us.”
“We’re working to get those players [Eid and Starke Hedlund] ready for Sunday’s game but we’re not sure. Nevertheless they will have their first training on Saturday will be ready for the away game against Viking in match day 2, at the latest.” said Karlsen.
For their part, Mjøndalen will be hoping for a return to the Eliteserien in 2019. They last played in the Norwegian top flight in 2015 and lost in the promotion playoffs in 2016 and 2017.
