Last month, Al-Fida’i recorded their first ever win over Kuwait at the Sabah Al-Ahmed International Stadium in Kuwait City. The fixture was designed to help both teams knock off the rust that had enveloped football in the region in the aftermath of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Unlike their counterparts in Europe, international football had come to a halt last year and there are even signs that fixtures may be delayed until the second half of 2021.
Last month, immediately following the final whistle, Palestine and Kuwait had agreed to play once more in order to further prepare their respective sides for competitive action. Never one to miss an opportunity for grandeur, PFA Chairman Jibril Rajoub announced Palestine would play host to Kuwait in celebration of Kuwait’s National Day festivities.
That announcement generated serious blow back in Kuwait’s Parliament. Kuwait which does not recognize Israel and has issued strong condemnation of the ongoing occupation at the UN and other forums, will most likely see any travel to the West Bank as an act of normalization.
There has been no official word from either FA regarding the match, due to to be played on February 25th, but one Kuwaiti outlet reported that it had been cancelled earlier this month.
